Exploration of Music and Science
Posted: December 23, 2010 Filed under: Buzz Entertainment PR | Tags: art, exhibits, history, live music, mechanical music, music, Orlando Science Center, science, victorian era Leave a comment »I recently took a step back in time to the Victorian Era to explore the world of mechanical music. I was able to hear, see and experience live musical entertainment like people did more than 100 years ago. My glimpse into the lifestyles and leisure activities of that day was courtesy of an exhibit at the Orlando Science Center called “The World of Mechanical Music: Science, History, Craftsmanship and Art.” The exhibit runs at the Orlando Science Center through January 9, 2011. Following are photos I took showing the ancestry of our modern marvels.
- Music supplies – examples of early merch, record needles & album covers from Columbia Records & RCA Music.
- Ad, circa 1912 – Edison Phonograph ran a full-age ad in Everybody’s Magazine promoting it as a pleasure that never loses its novelty.
- Ad, circa 1809 – Edison Phonograph ran a full-page ad in Everybody’s Magazine promoting its cost of $22 and how it plays Amberol Records and Standard Records.
- Boom box, circa 1924 – radios like this battery operated Atwater Kent Radio supplanted mechanical music instruments.
- DJ, circa 1914 – this Seeburg Nickelodeon with large orchestration sound was found in small dance halls and speakeasies.
- Record player, circa 1907 – Edison Phonograph, invented by Thomas Alva Edison. He never meant for his phonograph to be used for music. He intended it for dictation purposes.
- Street performer, circa 1850 – this Molinari Monkey Organ amused onlookers with an organ grinder and real monkey that solicited pocket change.
- Band in a box, circa 1910 – Wurlitzer 150 Military Band Organ, built by Rudolph Wurlitzer. He would later become the largest supplier of band instruments in America.
- Jukebox hero, circa 1900 – Like its predecessor 30 years later, this disc playing, coin-operated music box played tunes for patrons of coffee houses
- CD player, circa 1890 – this player would play the same disc over and over until the owner had a chance to change it.

Despite having had a nearly 25-year (and counting) career in show business, singer Debbie Gibson is still full of youthful energy and excitement when talking about recent projects and what she has planned for the future — perhaps that is due in part to the fact that she had her first hit single and taste of fame when she was only 16 years old. The ever-vivacious Gibson is particularly excited about taking part in a benefit concert and cabaret show tonight here in San Francisco, “One Night Only: A Shrektacular Holiday Celebration,” which will also feature the cast of Shrek currently at the Orpheum Theatre, and raises funds for the Richmond/Ermet AIDS Foundation.
“Pretty much if I’m available, I can’t say no to this organization,” says Gibson, who has always been heavily involved with helping charitable groups throughout her career. “I really enjoy these intimate shows with solo theater performers, and it’s kind of a perfect fit for me — obviously I bring my pop persona to the table, but at the same time I’m part of the theater community, so it makes perfect sense really.”
The ‘80s pop chanteuse, famous for her initial hits such as “Only In My Dreams,” “Out of the Blue,” and “Electric Youth,” was one of the few stars of that time and genre who wrote and arranged much of her own material, which led to her successful forays into Broadway productions, and eventually into acting for film.
Her recent appearance in the cult B-movie Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus has also sparked a new run of interest for celluloid gigs, with Gibson happily looking forward to the release of a new SyFy Channel movie, Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, which finds her teamed with another singer and actress who once vied for the same airwaves and video times as she did back in the 1980s — none other than Tiffany.
“[Mega Shark] was so bad it was good; this one is smart, kitschy, and campy, it’s sexy sci-fi horror, and it was so much fun to do,” enthuses Gibson. “The first one was done a lot on blue screen, and all that; for this one I was hanging from rope ladders, crawling in the swamp, and climbing buildings. It was actually quite an action movie in addition to being a sci fi movie. Throw in a little food fight between me and Tiffany and there you go!”
Gibson says that both actresses had fun playing on their supposed rivalry from their youth, and that they didn’t mind that some of the people behind the film may have had, er, some ulterior motives. “We were like, ‘what dirty old men at SyFy sat around [asking] how they could get Tiffany and Debbie Gibson to get whipped cream on each other?’”
Gibson is referencing a scene from the movie — which comes out next month — that was released early, showing a drawn-out, extended cat fight between the two involving smashed cake, wrestling in a river, and a hilarious reference to the title of one of their hit songs. At tonight’s special show, Gibson is planning on performing a new song, one she hopes will provide a new take on holiday tunes, and also on her supposedly squeaky clean image from her past.
“I wrote it about a year ago, and it’s a kind of a modern ‘Santa Baby,’ a sexy, jazzy, original Christmas song. It’s tongue in cheek, mocking myself, it’s called ‘The Naughty List’ — I’ve always been the good girl and I’d very much like to be on ‘The Naughty List’ for once!”

Due to the time difference, host/producer Paul Turner in Melbourne and Gibson in LA, the interview was pre-taped. Turner then promoted the interview live on the show a week prior to the air date as well as on the show’s Facebook page until the actual airing on December 4. After the show, Turner posted a link to the full interview on Facebook. Big thanks to the show and its host/producer. Be sure to check out the interview. Cheers!

New Bio for Pop and Broadway Star
Posted: November 30, 2010 Filed under: Buzz Entertainment PR | Tags: biography, broadway stars, Children International, Debbie Gibson, Murad, pop stars, PR Leave a comment »For more than 20 years, Debbie Gibson has proven she’s an entertainer of immeasurable talent. From singer, songwriter and musician to actress and dancer, she embodies what it truly means to be an entertainer.
Gibson exploded on the pop music scene at the tender age of 16. A music prodigy, she quickly became the youngest person ever to write, produce and perform a number one single, (“Foolish Beat”), a record she still holds today in the Guinness Book of World Records. To date, Gibson has sold more than 16 million albums worldwide.
After conquering the pop world, she set her sights on the theater. Gibson took a star turn in the Broadway production of “Les Miserables” as Eponine. She broke box office records in the London West End production of “Grease” as Sandy, and then took the stage in the U.S. Broadway tours of “Grease” and “Funny Girl” playing Rizzo and Fanny Brice. Gibson also wowed critics as Belle in Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” Gypsy Rose Lee in “Gypsy,” The Narrator in the national tour of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” Cinderella in the national production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” with Eartha Kitt, Velma Kelly in “Chicago,” and Sally Bowles in the Broadway revival of “Cabaret.”
Continuing to dazzle with entertainment magic, Gibson bridged the gap between Pop Music and Broadway with her one-woman show “Pop Goes Broadway.” Critics agreed it was “the best show Atlantic City has seen in quite some time…it’s totally entertaining,” during her three-week engagement in May 2008 at The Concert Venue at Harrah’s. Phil Roura of the New York Daily News said, “she has mastered her craft to the point where she just doesn’t perform a song – she embraces it and delivers it with her own special stamp of approval.”
In 2010, Gibson guest starred in “Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy” at MGM/Foxwoods. She is the composer and co-lyricist on a new musical in pre-production for Broadway: “The Flunky”, written by Jimmy Van Patten. Gibson also made her debut in the world of orchestration. She collaborated on both the score and the powerful closing credits song, “Rise,” for Dr. Rutledge’s documentary, “3 Billion and Counting,” about Malaria prevention in third world countries.
To fill her passion of mentoring and fostering young performers and songwriters as well as pass the torch to the next generation of musical sensations, she created “Deborah Gibson’s Electric Youth,” a series of performing arts camps and music boot camps. In addition, she formed the “Gibson Girl Foundation” that awards scholarships to those who desire to attend an entertainment camp, but are unable to afford tuition.
As the new spokesperson for Children International, she recently spent time in impoverished villages in Manila. Gibson is also the new Resurgence spokeswoman for Murad, Inc., joining Joan Lunden, former host of ABC’s Good Morning America and Josie Bissett, Melrose Place alum.
Currently, the “Original Pop Princess” has a new album from Sony Japan. “Ms. Vocalist” is top 10 on the Billboard charts and the first single, “I Love You,” hit No. 1. In February 2011, she will be doing a concert tour overseas.
From number one hits and platinum albums to starring roles on Broadway, film and TV, Gibson is a true entertainer with talent and charisma. For more information, visit her online.
